Englisch der Rechtswissenschaften - English for Law - UNIcert III/1

Prerequisite: At least 70 points on the English Placement Test or completion of EAP II/2.

Course:

This course will familiarise students with the common law legal system of England and Wales, the oldest in the world. We shall look at the workings of the system (stare decisis, the Courts, juries and adversarial practice) and at specific fields of law, such as tort, contract, employment law and the law of property. At some points we shall compare and contrast UK law with German law: there are some surprising differences.

Information about the course material will be provided in class.

The course will be conducted via online conferencing, and is intended to use the 'flipped classroom' method: i.e. you should assimilate the material sent to you before class, and be ready to discuss it over a computer link in small intensive tutorial groups during the 4-hour / 2x2-hour class periods each week. There will also be a number of 'normal' classes during the semester in which the whole class will be engaged for the entire time.

The instructor in this course is an former barrister from England.
