Englisch der Rechtswissenschaften - English for Law - UNIcert III/1 - Intensivkurs September 2019
The focus of the course is the understanding and use of English in a legal context. The UK legal system will be the example, but the aim will be to improve language and learning skills and knowledge of reference resources. The skills and knowledge developed on the course can later be used in understanding other English language legal systems, their practices and texts.
The course consists of three main sections: a section on the institutions and practitioners of UK law, a section on the texts of UK law, such as legislation, cases and contracts and a section on the practical skills of text writing, presenting and negotiating. A key topic during the course will be Brexit and its possible legal implications for the UK and other EU states, their citizens and businesses. Extracts from cases, legislation, journals and textbooks as well as newspaper articles, podcasts and videos will be used in class.
The four key skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking will be developed during the course. Students will be encouraged to engage and participate with other members of the class and will be given support in presenting their own ideas and knowledge.
The instructor of this course is from Wales and has a law degree from Cardiff University.
